Reasons to feel good (and even excited) in 2023 and beyond

Shanee Cohen

This past year was both unpredictable and eventful. And while navigating uncertainty can be uncomfortable, it also creates opportunity for learning and discovery. Perhaps few grasped this more than the late, great David Bowie, a master of reinvention. Reflecting on his 1971 release “Changes,” Bowie recalled that “I wanted to turn people on to new ideas and new perspectives. And so I had to govern everything around that.”

At Nimble Works, we too are committed to embracing ch-ch-changes, such as those that come with a new year. More than that, we are proud to work with clients at the intersection of high science and high tech—innovative companies that are creating possibilities for a brighter, healthier future. So much so that we wanted to share a few examples that we hope give you, as they have given us, a few reasons to feel good about 2023 and beyond.

Innovation gets personal

When you think about game-changing scientific breakthroughs, it’s easy to lose sight of the impact they can have on individual people. But that is precisely the focus of DayTwo, a microbiome-based precision health company committed to creating individualized solutions for the epidemic of diabetes, prediabetes, and more. The fact is that every gut microbiome is unique. Even identical twins respond to the same food differently. Using the highest resolution analysis of a person’s gut microbiome, DayTwo is able to predict their blood sugar responses to any food or food combination. The result? A nutritional plan tailored to a unique biology—empowering individuals to make better food choices before even taking a bite.

As DayTwo members have experienced, when a program is built around personal biology vs. more restrictive diets, they are more likely to stick with it. Our Nimble team has been fascinated by this innovative approach since the beginning of our budding partnership. And we look forward to a future when our wishes for a “happy and healthy New Year” become more attainable and lasting!

Heroic medtech hiding in plain sight

If you’re like us, you might have taken advantage of the holidays to catch up on the latest blockbusters. And why not? Nothing beats sitting in a state-of-the-art movie theater as the lights dim and you lose yourself in an immersive viewing experience. Larger displays and image-enhancing technology create the awe-inspiring feeling of being inside the movie itself, with some theaters even offering customized views from different vantage points. Now imagine the same technology is powering a different type of theater—the operating theater. Due to rising demand for sophisticated surgical display devices and minimally invasive treatments, the global medical display market is experiencing meteoric growth.

Leading the way is Barco, a global technology company that develops networked visualization solutions for the entertainment, enterprise, and healthcare industries. Across all these markets, Barco image processing solutions are making a visible impact, helping hospitals provide their patients with the best possible care. In the imaging department, during specialist consultations, and in the surgical suite, Barco solutions and services are helping medical professionals achieve better health outcomes and work more efficiently in an increasingly complex healthcare environment. So the next time you nestle into a movie theater to watch your favorite superhero take center stage, consider that the technology around you may also be powering life-saving procedures by everyday heroes the world over.

New tech bolsters collaborative care teams

As you read up on 2023 healthcare trends, it’s hard to miss the widespread staffing shortages and burnout that dominate news headlines. And while these challenges are all too familiar to those on the front lines, they are also spurring health systems to take urgent action to address them at the source. Paving the way to a more resilient workforce, healthcare leaders are investing in new tech innovations to ease the burden on healthcare professionals while empowering them to deliver the best care possible.

One such example is Philips Collaboration Live, the medical industry’s first tele-ultrasound technology that lets clinicians collaborate, text, share screens with remote colleagues, and transfer control to them in real time. If there is one thing we learned through the pandemic, it’s that collaboration matters, now more than ever. And, too often, there is precious little time for it, only adding to the burden and burnout teams are feeling. Innovative platforms like Collaboration Live provide a virtual space for care teams to safely and securely share key findings and learnings, while maximizing scarce resources and expanding access to care. In 2022, Collaboration Live received FDA clearance to expand remote diagnostic use on even more mobile platforms. With this expansion, care teams can finally be in multiple places at once, allowing them to enhance patient and staff experiences, improve workflow efficiencies and drive better health outcomes.

The promise of more to come

We begin 2023 inspired by these examples and hope we have inspired you in sharing them. We are confident that our work with innovative clients who are shaping the future of healthcare will bring forth even more reasons to feel good in the New Year. To bring it back to Bowie: “Tomorrow belongs to those who can hear it coming.” In that spirit, we will continue to listen and learn, shape and share stories of a promising future that belongs to us all.
